Regenerative tourism represents an opportunity for the industry to respond to clear market demand and develop new approaches to sustainability and innovative business models. But it suffers from a lack of defined methodologies and demonstrable impact.

Report Overview

In the first entry in our Fact from Fiction series on sustainability issues in tourism, we tackled the emergence of the “regenerative tourism” paradigm. Through a combination of expert consultation and primary and secondary research, we scrutinized whether it represents anything new and questioned its viability as a paradigm.

We approached the topic from multiple angles, establishing what regenerative tourism means for experts in the field, consumers, certification bodies, businesses in the travel sector, and destinations. Following the publication of the report we received wide-ranging feedback from multiple readers and listeners to the subsequent podcast and LinkedIn Live session. Although most found the analysis useful, others, particularly from within the regenerative movement, took issue with some of the conclusions of the report. Overall, this sparked useful discussion and provided the basis for the feedback report that follows.

We apply an analytical lens to the debate that emerged following the report's publication and the release of Skift's Linkedin Live event and podcast on the subject. We analyze various opposing views and apply our thinking to some potential solutions to the more challenging issues surrounding the paradigm.
